Residual affiliate programs can give some much needed stability to an online business. With affiliate marketing, you can go from month to month with a fair amount of instability; especially at first.

When I started out, it took a long time to sustain a level of sales and income. At first, I just didn’t make any sales at all! As I kept at it, the time between sales became less and less. Once I discovered residual affiliate programs I was able to make a consistent income through affiliate marketing from subscription affiliate programs.

Subscription programs are definitely a good idea. Each sale gives you a monthly income, rather than a single commission. Of course there’s attrition – people drop out from subscription programs. Put in on your site and hey-presto, you have a subscription website!

How To Create A Subscription Website Service Through Email Marketing

From any website, you can offer your visitors a freebie “giveaway” product in exchange for their email address. This is known as a lead magnet. I have a few ebooks on my site as lead magnets and they help me to build my email list. An email list is a pretty important tool for helping you to build a subscription service customer base.

On a website, it can be difficult to convey your message to those who don’t understand your service. Particularly if you offer affiliate products and courses which are more difficult to grasp. Physical products are pretty straight forward, but conveying the value in recurring income products can be more tricky.

Aweber is an email marketing service but they also have an affiliate program which pays recurring commissions.

If this is the case, an email marketing service can magnify your uptake of sales. It’s also a great way to extend the period of time a customer is exposed to your product/s. On a website, you only get 10 minutes at the most to make a sale. But when someone subscribes to your offer via email, you can dramatically extend this time period.

Sometimes I make sales from my emails years after someone has subscribed. This just doesn’t happen on a website. There’s millions of websites out there and the chances of someone returning to yours years later is pretty low! But get them on your email list and it’s different!

In order to become successful with an affiliate website, you need to attract customers. The main problem here is you don’t know what you’re getting and you’ll pay more for sites which are more profitable. You also have to ask why someone would sell a profitable site and how difficult it is to change everything over into your own name, etc.

Other Considerations For A Turnkey Site

If you’re starting out for the first time as an affiliate marketer, you’ll want a number of products to promote from your website. With certain products you’ll earn a whole lot more than with others. Amazon is the typical “go-to” affiliate website for new affiliates. However, Amazon’s affiliate rates aren’t great – 3%-11% compared to much higher rates for digital products (30%-60%). Some products are “one-off” sales so you only make a single commission on sales you generate. Recurring commission affiliate programs on the other hand keep paying you for previous referrals. A good high ticket product range can mean a much higher ROI (return on investment) and can also let you use more expensive marketing tactics (paid marketing).

Paid marketing is much faster and more scalable than content marketing. With low value affiliate products, you’ll have your work cut out because it’s more difficult to afford paid marketing and still make a profit. The SFM Digital Business system offers a number of commission strategies:

Affiliate Loophole

Back in the early 2000’s I found an “affiliate loophole” which let me get free traffic from Google. It worked some of the time so I decided to build my blogging strategy around it. It’s based on a course I did by a guy called George Brown called Google Sniper. Google Sniper taught to find keyword targeted domain names in uncompetitive niches.

I successfully built several websites using this strategy which went on to rank for their keywords on the first page (and often the top) of the Google search engine. The main problem was as Google updates came out, (Penguin and Panda), small spammy websites were kicked off the top of Google. Back in the early 2000’s it was so much easier to rank a site than it is now. Back then, you could own a three page website and it would rank at the top for your chosen keywords.

Still, I persevered with the strategy and managed to pick up free traffic from Google, Bing, Yahoo and Duckduckgo.

Affiliate Loophole – Identify Low Competition Keywords

The first step of this “affiliate loophole” is to identify long tail, low competition keywords. You simply won’t be able to compete with the more competitive keywords. In the affiliate marketing niche, it’s also very competitive, so I knew I had my work cut out. But in a less competitive niche, It’ll be much easier to get free traffic.

But you need to weigh up the relative competition and your monetisation strategy. In some low competition niches, it’s much harder to monetise, even with traffic.

There’s lots of tools for doing keyword research available to buy. But I’ve always just stuck with Google’s free keyword planner. You can start by typing in your “seed” keyword into the keyword planner. With this site, for instance, it’s going to be affiliate marketing, or some derivative of it.

As you can see, there’s a huge amount of traffic for the major keywords in this niche. But rather than aim for the competitive keywords which get a lot of traffic, we’re going to find the less competitive ones which have less traffic, but less competition. We want the “low hanging fruit” keywords which we can rank articles for.

Strategies To Find Long Tail, Uncompetitive Keywords

One simple strategy is to look for the keywords which get searched for less. To do this we can click on the box with “Av. Monthly Searches” in it – the average monthly search traffic. Click on it until you get the keywords which offer less traffic. Although this might seem counter intuitive, it’s far better to rank for keywords which only get a few searches every month, than never rank for the ones which get thousands of monthly searches.

You can then scroll through pages of longer tail keywords, until you find a suitable keyword you can create content for. Ideally, you want to find keywords which relate to your product or service, which you can potentially rank for. You also want buyer traffic, which means you need to think about the intent behind each search.

Comparing Keywords On Google

Although there’s other search engines which will index your content, Google is the most widely used. Some of your content may not rank on Google, but it might rank on other search engines. But if you create some quality content, with a long term focus, you’re more likely to rank on more of the search engines. Aim for Google rankings though because they are the toughest to rank for. Some of your content might not make it, but they could pick up free search traffic from other engines like Bing, Yahoo and Duckduckgo for example.

Once you’ve found a search term you would like to create some content for, head over to Google to see how competitive your search term is.

Type your keyword into the Google search bar and look for the number which comes up underneath it. You’ll need to be on a desktop computer or laptop in order to see this. I doesn’t work on a mobile phone. As you can see in the picture above, the number is 1,320,000. This is the number of competing pages for this search term. You want to find those with a number of less than 10,000,000 (10 million) ideally. Once you’ve done this, try the search again with quotes around it. This will give you an idea of the number of competing pages with this term specifically.

What we’re doing here is looking for the long tail keywords which relate to your website, and which offer the least competition. This is more art than science, but it gives you a general idea about the relative competition for the keywords which you want to get found for.

Affiliate Traffic Loophole

This process will take some time to get good at. But the more you do it, the more you’ll be able to identify long tail keywords and obscure keywords which are less competitive and which you can rank your content for. Once you have identified a specific keyword which you would like to create content around, you can get started writing.

You can also create videos using the same keyword and upload them to YouTube. Ideally you would do both: a blog post and a video for maximum effect. I use an SEO plugin (Yoast SEO) to help me write my articles. You can also check out the content which ranks the highest on Google for your keyword and write a better article than the best performing post.

Another way to use the keyword planner is to simply type obscure keyword combinations into it. Look for keywords which contain your “seed keyword” and other variations of it. This article, for example, uses the keywords “affiliate loophole”. It’s a short keyword but the term loophole has fewer competing pages than most in the affiliate niche.

Another tool I sometimes use is the online thesaurus. This tool can give you a number of keyword terms which relate to your niche, but which are also less competitive than the others.

Summary

This little strategy has helped me generate free traffic to my websites for some time. There’s another loopholes to affiliate marketing which I share in my article: affiliate marketing loophole, too.

As an affiliate you have to remember also that something like 90% of your online efforts won’t actually produce the result you’re after. But if you get stuck into a strategy, you’ll see over time than some of it works and some doesn’t. This little strategy is definitely a long term one. Be prepared for some to hit and others to miss. But if you stick at it for the long term, you should see some results. I have thousands of articles on various websites. Most of them don’t get the traction I really want them to. But some of them get me traffic, leads and sales.

Some niches are also much more competitive than others. So if you’re lucky enough to be in a less competitive niche than affiliate marketing, (which isn’t hard), you’re more likely to succeed with this strategy.

Subscription Affiliate Programs

Subscription affiliate programs are one of the best ways to make a stable and predictable monthly income from affiliate marketing. Without them, it can be much more difficult to do so. One of the main problems with affiliate marketing is consistency. You don’t know from one month to the next what you’re going to earn, unless you’ve been in business for years. Even then, some months are better than others.

A drought one month can be followed by a tsunami of sales the next. Subscription affiliate programs help to smooth out the ups and downs of affiliate marketing and give you a predictable and stable income.

As a beginner in affiliate marketing, the early few months and years can be the most difficult. Once you’ve sold a subscription affiliate product, it’s easier to believe that the affiliate marketing business is a realistic possibility. Getting fired up with this belief can carry you through the tough times you’ll need to endure as you get your affiliate business going.

What Are Subscription Affiliate Programs?

So what are subscription affiliate programs? And why are they a good idea for affiliates? Subscriptions are everywhere today. You’ve probably got a subscription for your electric bills, your gym access and other utility bills too. With an affiliate business, it’s worth choosing subscription products online which you can promote too.

Most affiliate products don’t have subscriptions attached to them; they are just single products which are bought once. So for these products the affiliate only makes a single commission.

With membership products and software products the customer keeps using a service for the long term. Examples on of online subscription affiliate programs are things such as autoresponders (email marketing services), or training and mentorship programs which carry a membership cost. The benefit of programs like these to the customer should be of course to provide ongoing value. To the affiliate, it means regular and recurring affiliate commissions, month in and month out.

Monthly Subscription Affiliate Programs

With monthly subscription affiliate programs, you’ll get paid over and over again for your referrals. With a single sale of a physical product, you only get one commission. Let’s look at an example of why monthly subscription affiliate programs are better than single sale products.

Let’s use a high ticket example of a digital product for a fairer comparison. With high ticket affiliate programs, you can earn larger commissions because your products are digital (giving you larger commissions), and the price is high for the item. So an example product might sell for $2500 and you’ll receive $1000 in commission (at 40%).

It’s obvious that a monthly commission of $10 a month is better than the sale of a low cost single product. A $100 product which pays the affiliate 40%, ($40) will be overtaken in just 5 months in terms of commission. But for a high ticket product which pays out $1000 in commission, a recurring commission of $10 will take 100 months to match the commission.

However, when you add a few more monthly recurring commissions, this gap soon closes. With just 10 sales, you’ll be earning $100 a month, each and every month (when a recurring commission pays out $10 a month per member referral). With 100 members, you’ll be earning $1000 a month, every month. Over time and through compounding your sales, monthly subscription affiliate programs can overtake commissions from even the high ticket items.

Affiliate Subscription Programs

Here’s a few affiliate subscription programs which I’ve come across:

Much of this list are business tools and software type products which are used for online business owners and affiliate marketers. There’s a good reason why you would want to choose such tools. For one, they provide massive value to business owners. Without these tools, online businesses wouldn’t run very smoothly or as well as they do. Some online businesses simply wouldn’t exist without some of these tools.

This makes them massively important to online business owners. Should you promote one of these tools to a business, and they subsequently generate income from its use, you’ve created an income stream for life. Of course businesses change their tools and subscriptions from time to time. But if you’ve referred someone to a business tool which they vitally need for their business, they are more likely to use it for life.

Lifetime commission affiliate programs are what you really want to look for in subscription affiliate programs. Those which offer huge value to their users and which are used for businesses to function properly or become more lucrative.

Finding More Programs With Recurring Incomes

You can find many more affiliate programs which offer subscriptions. Just google “subscription affiliate programs” and you’ll see a number of lists of them. Another way to find them is to look for subscription programs through Clickbank using a website called CBEngine.com.

Once you’re on CBEngine you can find the recurring commission products listed on Clickbank by looking down the left panel for “CB Recurring”.

Click on the tab at the bottom left hand side market “CB Recurring” and you’ll find a huge list of recurring income products on Clickbank. The main problem with Clickbank however is the standard of products is much lower in many cases. Make sure you have a good look at what you’re promoting before doing so. Products which don’t offer massive lifetime value will be much harder to sell and you’ll get a larger drop out rate with them too.

Subscription Based Products

Subscription based affiliate programs should offer great value. One of the products I promote is The Six Figure Mentors affiliate program. Their membership fee is $97 per month of which the affiliate receives $20 a month. This doesn’t seem like much but once you start building up your memberships it soon adds up.

Another subscription based affiliate program I like is Aweber. I’ve used Aweber since becoming an affiliate so I can stand by the product knowing it offers huge value. I wouldn’t be able to run my affiliate business without it. Of course some affiliates will move when they find Aweber isn’t meeting their requirements, but for most affiliate’s Aweber is a great fit.

Aweber will pay it’s affiliates 30% recurring monthly commissions. So if you sign up someone for $19 a month to the service, you’ll get a recurring income of $5.70 every month for that referral.

Affiliate Subscription Programs – Other Considerations

Subscriptions are very useful for affiliates if they want to sustain a business for the long term. Having those monthly subs drop into your account month after month makes all the difference, especially when your starting out and struggling. Another consideration is to focus on only digital products which typically pay out much larger commissions.

With digital products, you can typically earn upwards of 30% commissions on sales you generate. Compared with physical products which typically pay from 3% to 11 %, and you can see a massive disparity. Physical products carry many more costs than digital products, such as handling and postage costs. So they can’t compete with digital products in terms of commissions.

High ticket products too are another consideration for affiliates. High ticket products offer the best of both worlds: High levels of commissions and a large price tag.

Multi-tier commissions are commissions paid based on your members making sales within a specific product range. With a multi-tier affiliate program, you earn based on sales generated by your referrals. See best two-tier affiliate programs.

A product range is something else to consider too. With a single product, you can only earn once, and recurring subscriptions tend to be small. A product range offers multiple ways to benefit from having sold the first product in a range; including a built in sales team – closing sales on your behalf. Affiliate Marketing Mentoring

With the right affiliate marketing mentoring, your affiliate journey can be a whole lot simpler! When I started out online, I wasted a huge amount of time. I didn’t know what I was doing, and there was very little help available. Despite taking several online “money making” courses, I was still struggling years after starting. Affiliate Marketing Scepticism

I was pretty sceptical at first, since I’d paid for a few courses like this and was still struggling years after. But the difference with this one was I could actually meet Stuart Ross and Jay Kubassek, the founders of the company SFM (Six Figure Mentors). I went to my first meeting and met some of the other members of the community and the person who had referred me. The second meeting was organised through the company where I met Stuart and Jay.

Of course being a sceptical and cynical person, I always had the idea that this was a scam in the back of my mind! This hesitancy didn’t serve me in building my business either! It’s a little like driving with the brakes on. “What if it’s a scam”, I kept telling myself. So I was less committed at first and more hesitant!
